Evaluation of a National STEM Faculty Development Program: What Can We Learn about What They Learn?

With an increased national focus on STEM education, many faculty members take advantage of professional development programs to learn about evidence-based teaching methods. The literature about institutional change demonstrates that despite widespread knowledge about empirically based teaching approaches, persistent obstacles prevent many STEM instructors from implementing these approaches in their classrooms. The Yale Center for Teaching and Learning coordinates a national faculty development initiative that has been funded since 2004 and has trained over 1400 STEM faculty to date. We sought to deepen our understanding of faculty adoption of ‘scientific teaching’ principles by exploring personal and institutional factors that influence implementation. This seminar will describe the theoretical model that was developed and tested using a survey of all past program participants. In addition to summarizing obstacles and benefits encountered by this group of educators, I will describe a progressive process of adoption in which the educators determine whether or not to include such practices in their teaching. Using this model, we investigate and report on personal, logistical, and professional culture factors that impacted the adoption of scientific teaching methods as educators progressed through the adoption process. Implications for faculty development initiatives will be presented for further discussion.
About the Speaker:
Jennifer Frederick, Executive Director of the Yale Center for Teaching and Learning, received her B.A. with honors in Chemistry from Cornell University and her Ph.D. in Chemistry from Yale. Following faculty teaching appointments at both public and private universities in Connecticut, Jenny returned to Yale in 2007 as Associate Director and Science Education Specialist at the Graduate Teaching Center. She went on to assume positions of increasing responsibility within the University, including Director of the Center for Scientific Teaching where she has advanced a national effort to transform undergraduate science teaching at colleges and universities across the United States. Her accomplishments in this area include leading presentations and workshops focused on STEM teaching, and the publication of numerous journal articles. The Center for Scientific Teaching integrated with other teaching support offices on campus in 2014 when the Yale Center for Teaching and Learning was launched. Jenny was appointed Executive Director for the new center, and brings to the role interdisciplinary teaching experience and a commitment to inclusive teaching practices in higher education.
